Reality Bites and other tales (employment or not so much so)

Per Cent of U.S. Population, 16 yrs and older, Employed

Per Cent Population, 16 yrs and older, Employed

Job created in August dropped to 151,000, with unemployment (Obama’s) at 4.9%. Real unemployment is 9.7%

( – Following Thursday’s report of manufacturing weakness, the Obama administration on Friday released the August employment numbers, showing little or no improvement from the prior month.

94,391,000 Americans were not in the labor force in August, 58,000 more than July’s 94,333,000; and the labor force participation rate was stuck at 62.8 percent, just where it was in July, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.

It was one year ago, in September 2015, that the labor force participation rate dropped to 62.4 percent, its lowest point since 1977. (The best it’s been since Barack Obama took office is 65.8 percent in February 2009, the month after Obama was sworn in amid a recession.)

The labor force participation rate is the percentage of people in the civilian noninstitutionalized population, age 16 or older, who are either working or actively seeking work. People who are no longer looking for work, for whatever reason — retirement, school, family, or they’ve just given up — are not participating in the labor force.

In Friday’s report, BLS said the economy added 151,000 jobs in August, not as much as analysts expected. That compares with an average monthly gain of 204,000 over the prior 12 months. (The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for June was revised down from +292,000 to +271,000, and the change for July was revised up from +255,000 to +275,000. Combined, employment gains in June and July were 1,000 less than previously reported.)

The August unemployment rate held steady at 4.9 percent, as the number of unemployed persons increased 79,000 to 7,849,000.  At the same time, the number of employed persons increased 97,000 to 151,614,000 in July.

The August numbers are being closely watched by economists as an indication of whether the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates later this month. Weak number suggest it will not, and given Friday’s lackluster report, most analysts don’t expect a rate hike until December.

Before the monthly report on U.S. employment was released on Friday morning, analysts were predicting the addition of 180,000 new jobs and a downward tick in the unemployment rate to 4.8 percent from 4.9 percent.

In August, the nation’s civilian noninstitutionalized population, consisting of all people 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution, reached 253,854,000. Of those, 159,463,000 participated in the labor force by either holding a job or actively seeking one.

The 159,463,000 who participated in the labor force equaled 62.8 percent of the 253,854,000 civilian noninstitutionalized population.

A report released Thursday said U.S. manufacturing contracted last month for the first time since February, as new orders and output plummeted and factories cut jobs.

The Institute for Supply Management said Thursday that its manufacturing index dropped to 49.4 in August from 52.6 in July. Any reading below 50 signals contraction.

The report suggests that manufacturers continue to struggle as businesses spend less on machinery, computers and other large equipment. Auto sales have also leveled off this year after reaching a record level in 2015.

“Over the last thirty years, the United States has been taken over by an amoral financial oligarchy, and the American dream of opportunity, education, and upward mobility is now largely confined to the top few percent of the population. Federal policy is increasingly dictated by the wealthy, by the financial sector, and by powerful (though sometimes badly mismanaged) industries such as telecommunications, health care, automobiles, and energy. These policies are implemented and praised by these groups’ willing servants, namely the increasingly bought-and-paid-for leadership of America’s political parties, academia, and lobbying industry.” – Charles Ferguson – Predator Nation

The Alternate Realities

“And it seems to me perfectly in the cards that there will be within the next generation or so a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda, brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods.” — Aldous Huxley

Obama, on Midway Atoll, speaks of protecting planet

(Edited excerpt)

Barack Obama arrived on Midway Atoll today, paying (faux) homage to the men killed in a critical World War II battle and stressing the importance of protecting the planet and all its inhabitants from the effects of climate change. Obama emerged from (his high carbon footprint) Air Force One and greeted the roughly 40 inhabitants of Midway who had come out to welcome him. “We are going to have a great time,” he told them.

In addition to (the wastefulness generated by) Obama, more than 9,000 delegates from 194 countries (traveled to) Honolulu for the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress.

“Yet while the rest of the populace was suffering, the rich just got richer. In 2009 and 2010, years in which millions were unable to find work, the top one percent reaped 93% of the ‘recovery’ income, and corporations are making more than they ever did. And the (Politicians and Bureaucrats) can still propose even further cuts in the taxes of ‘job creators’ whose only job creation has been for their own lawyers and lobbyists.”  — Gary Wills

[Flashback – 24 March 2014]
Keeping the consequences of elections in perspective:

The NRO tallied what taxpayers are paying for M/M O to live large on the taxpayers’ dime: a grand total of $1.4 billion per year: Air Force One ($181,757 per hour), executive chef ($100,000 per year), three full-time White House calligraphers ($277,050 per year for the trio), chief of staff to the president’s dog ($102,000 per year), Obama’s royal motorcade ($2.2 million).

$1.4 Billion is the current annual cost of the White House — just in household expenses, not including US policy operations for which the WH exists–administered by some 900 parasites—policy staff recruited by Obama. There’s the $100 million trip to Africa not including the foreign aid billions Obama handed out to these oil-rich satraps. There’s serial Obama vacations costing taxpayers millions—- (the low estimate Hawaii vacations is $4 million each, but is probably five times that); the pricey Martha’s Vineyard stays; Mrs Obama’s costly trip to elite Marbella w/ an entourage of 30. Mrs Obama’s $3900 per night in aposh Ireland hotel with 30 more rooms for her entourage. $100 million alone was spent for the African apology tour.

TAXPAYERS SUFFERED RUINOUS HEALTHCARE CANCELLATIONS–BUT THEY PAY $7 MILLION FOR THE OBAMA’S HEALTHCARE—NRO found the first family’s yearly health-care costs Americans $7 million; the reason why only Obama himself was “enrolled” –and not his family—in a faked-up PR ploy.

Michelle Obama wore her pricey diamond bangles (bought on a govt salary?) at a DNC fund-raiser, attended by “tolerant and compassionate” Democrats…raised big bucks to keep Obama in office so he could work for “the poor.” Her diamond Gothic cuff priced at $15,350 set with 2.17 carats in diamonds and the Quatrefoil bracelet at $11,800 set with 1.73 carats in diamonds.

Michelle Obama wowed all the “tolerant and compassionate” Democrats who hate the rich and support endless tax-paid programs “for the poor.”

Not to forget an endless  succession of designer dresses and gowns—-like the $12,000 Caroline Hereara creation worn for the French state dinner (a bribe from Obama for his blonde indiscretion at the Mandela memorial?).

Michelle Obama has 24 assistants (at last count) at her beck and call. Her wardrobe, nails and hair pieces subsidized w/ tax dollars  of struggling Americans.

Yet still, there is all those “working poor” to profit from.
